Is Deep Learning for Visual Recognition an eBook? Or a "normal" book?

The Starter Bundle and Practitioner Bundle of Deep Learning for Visual Recognition include just the digital eBook files in PDF, .mobi, and .epub format. Only the ImageNet Bundle includes a hardcopy edition.

Which bundles include the hardcopy edition?

Only the ImageNet Bundle includes a hardcopy edition of Deep Learning for Visual Recognition mailed to your doorstep.

Why does only the ImageNet bundle include the hardcopy edition?

As a self-published author, it’s not cheap to have copies of the books printed — I also manually fulfill all orders myself. In order to make the hardcopies feasible, I need to charge a little extra and provide a ton of added value through the added video tutorials, virtual machine, etc.

Do I need any special hardware to run the examples in this book?

All examples inside the Starter Bundle can be executed on a CPU without a problem. The same is true for all examples in the Practitioner Bundle, although some examples will take longer to run. In either case, a GPU will dramatically speed up the network training process but is not a requirement.

That said, if you intend on going through the ImageNet Bundle, you are expected to have a GPU with at least 6GB of memory. The more GPUs you have available, the better. You should also have at least 1-2TB of free space on your machine. The ImageNet Bundle covers very advanced deep learning techniques on massive datasets, so make sure you make the necessary hardware preparations.

When will you ship the hardcopies of the Practical Python and OpenCV reward?

I am aiming to ship all hardcopy editions of Practical Python and OpenCV roughly 1-1.5 months after the Kickstarter ends. I will be individually numbering and hand-signing each copy of the book, along with mailing each individual package. This will take a bit of time for me to do, but I am confident that I can get it done quickly.

While I am waiting for my book to arrive, can I download the digital edition?

Yes, absolutely. Approximately 1 week after the Kickstarter ends I will email you a link that you can use to download your digital edition of Practical Python and OpenCV.

My reward level includes access to your PyImageSearch Gurus course. When can I access it?

One week after the Kickstarter ends I will email you a link you can use to create your account and access the complete PyImageSearch Gurus course.

How much programming experience do I need?

This book assumes you have some prior programming experience (e.g. you know what a variable function, loop, etc. are). You should have more skills than a beginner but certainly not an intermediate or advanced developer. As long as you understand basic programming logic-flow you’ll be successful in reading (and understanding) the contents of this book.

Do I need to know OpenCV?

You do not need to know the OpenCV library to be successful when going through this book. We only use OpenCV to facilitate basic image processing operations such as loading an image from disk, displaying it to our screen, etc.

That said, a little bit of OpenCV experience goes a long way, so if you’re new to OpenCV, I highly recommend that you back a Kickstarter reward level that includes a copy of my Practical Python and OpenCV book or my PyImageSearch Gurus course.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
